Sennheiser HD 25-1 Headphones Review - Perfect Portable Headphone Companion

For many people enjoying music on the go is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Listening to music while sitting on the subway is truly a wonderful way to pass the time. Sometimes it feels like you can handle anything as long as you have music, a CD player and your headphones. That's where the Sennheiser HD 25-1 comes in

When searching for a great portable headphone you'll probably read many reviews and try many portable and semi-portable headphones like the:

  • Ultrasone HFI 650 DVD Edition, a.k.a. HFI 700
  • Ultrasone HFI 700
  • Koss KSC 35
  • Koss Porta Pro
  • Sennheiser PX100/200
  • Sennheiser HD 280
  • Beyerdynamic 231 / 250-80
  • AKG 271

It's not surprising the Sennheiser HD 25-1 makes the list as a capable audiophile portable solution.

Three Versions of the Sennheiser HD25:

HD 25-1, the HD 25 silver - according to the manual is the same as the HD 25-1 only with different looks and the  HD 25-13. The Sennheiser HD 25-1 is the most commonly available one out of these three.

The HD 25-1 should not be confused with the HD 25 SP - the cheaper model. The cable on the HD 25-1 is one-sided whereas the cable on the HD 25 SP is two-sided. The headband on the HD 25-1 can be split - a truly unique feature. According to Sennheiser's website the Sennheiser HD 25 was originally designed for professional monitoring and DJs as it has a rotatable ear capsule for one-ear listening.

Overall Sound Character

The overall sound isn't laid back or extremely smooth but comparable to the Grado sound signature. The sound delivered is extremely balanced, and represents all parts of the frequency spectrum. Generally the HD 25 could be described as neutral -not natural. This can be both good and bad depending on your specific music and recording taste.

Looks and Profile

The Sennheiser HD25 have that old school look - all black and nothing fancy.

Odds and Ends

  • If you love to shake your head when listening to music - the HD 25 won't fall off, especially if you split the headband a little bit
  • As with most headphones the Sennheiser HD25 isn't ideal for use with glasses. The same is true for just abouth any other portable headphones - except maybe the Koss KSC 35.
  • Not foldable - but pretty small to start with
  • Small earcups allow you to lean your head against a headrest without the earcups touching anything. The same goes for lying down in a pillow
  • The Sennheiser HD25 can hang around the neck without being uncomfortable
  • For DJs: the left earpiece can swivel backwards or forwards

Conclusion

The unique features the HD 25 by Sennheiser can call its own:

  • Split-able headband
  • Extremely high sensitivity - no need for a headphone amp on the road
  • Outstanding quality
  • Small size and lightweight
  • Exchangeable parts
  • Low profile
  • Simple and microphonics-less and relatively short cable
  • Very good sound quality

To sum it up, in the world of portable headphones the Sennheiser HD 25-1 might not be the best in all areas - much of that depends on taste - but it is the best portable headphones overall. They make a perfect companion for music on the road.
